Autumn and Winter in Moraira

Ooooh, lovely! Autumn has arrived in Moraira. We all love the hot summer months, and the town and beaches bustling with happy holidaymakers, but take a look at these photos of Moraira in Autumn and you will appreciate why the Costa Blanca appeals to so many people as a holiday get-away, or retirement home, throughout the year.

Autumn brings plenty of sunny days, warm enough to sunbathe, enjoy lunch or coffee outside on the seafront, or take a leisurely stroll along some of Moraira´s many lovely tree-lined boulevards, sea-side promenades and beaches. You could even take a dip in the Med if you’re feeling a bit brave – lots of people do swim in the sea throughout the year.

You know that Autumn is on its way before the leaves start to turn, or the summer holidaymakers start to leave. The shop windows are suddenly transformed to display winter boots, warm jackets with fur collars, coats, scarves, hats and woolly jumpers. And we all can’t wait to wear them! It’s a fashion thing ………. In the UK, we wear lots of layers to keep warm. Here in Moraira, we wear lots of layers because it’s stylish, and so we can peel them off when the sun comes out!

The town is much quieter, of course, so you can browse the bargain rails in all the boutiques at your leisure, and maybe pick up that great outfit you saw in the summer at less than half price! You don’t always need to book to get the best table at your favourite restaurant and, because it’s quieter, you will get an even warmer welcome – the restaurants in Moraira really appreciate their winter customers, when business can be a bit slack for them.

Some of the trees lose their leaves in Autumn, like these along Avenida de la Paz in Moraira. We call these “the trees that hold hands”, as their branches are being trained to meet in the middle and provide a lovely canopy of shade in the summer. But there’s still lots of colour and interest around the town and in our gardens–oranges and lemons are ripe on the trees, and how about this poinsettia? It’s 4 metres tall, and its timing is perfect every year, with these lovely red bracts appearing at the beginning of December in time for Christmas. The strelizia (bird of paradise) flowers are in full bloom in my garden, and the bougainvillea, and the geraniums.

And now I’m off to Iceland – the supermarket, that is, which has just opened in nearby Benissa! Must stock up on a few Christmas essentials that I can’t get in Moraira or nearby Javea, like the extra wide foil for the turkey and some real, fresh, double cream. No, I definitely won’t be buying any turkey twizzlers!!
