Moraira Gardens along El Portet Road
For those who enjoy a gentle walk, this is one of the most enjoyable in Moraira and a great way to see some of the glorious scenery.
Start at the main car park where you can leave your car all day free of charge, aviod Fridays as this is market day and it’s held in the car park itself. On leaving the car park on foot by the Medical Centre exit, turn left and continue past the olive tree roundabout to the palm tree roundabout at the crossroads. Take the first right and walk along the cobbled street (Calatayud) to the bottom. Here, if you wish, you can watch the fish auction, you will see the building facing you, where the daily catch is auctioned at 10.0 a.m. (except public holidays). It is worth watching this as the auctioneer rattles off the prices at an alarming rate, starting with the highest price and working down accordingly, only stopping when a customer signals he will pay the price. You can join in if you wish but remember the fish is sold in boxes and most goes to the restaurants.
Continue past the restaurants on your left, turn left and cut through to a steep flight of steps. These will take you to the main road leading to El Portet. Up the steps and turn right and continue for about two hundred yards until you come to the coastal gardens. Descend into the gardens, sit awhile and enjoy the views over the yacht marina and looking towards Calpe rock.
Carry on waliking along the pathway to the end of the gardens, you will be back on the main road, overlooking El Portet beach, another glorious view. This is a very safe beach, delightful for swimming and there are two beachside cafes where you can enjoy a drink and/or lunch, literally by the water·s edge. For those more energetic you can climb to the tower above the beach. To do this go back to the first road on your right- follow to the top-turn right-follow to the junction-turn left-go up the hill to the very top and on the left you will see a pathway that leads up to the top of the hill where you will find the tower. The views over to Javea and beyond are well worth the 25 min climb!
